Name

Folegandros is the island of Cyclades, among Sikinos and Milosυ. It is 15 miles (East) from Milos and 22 miles NW. Santorini. It is also called Polycandros or Polycandros. The island has two large settlements. The capital is Town (or town Folegandros) built on the eastern side, on an elevation of 200 m. The other settlement,Upper Meria, is located further north and is the most traditional part of the island. The first mention of the island is in Greek mythology, where it is stated that it was first inhabited by shepherds from Western Greece who were looking for pastures. And of course, because these shepherds were men, the island was named Polyandros. An echo of this ancient name is the name of the island among sailors as Polykantro. Then, Mythology tells us that the Minoan Cretans came to the island, led by the son of the king of Crete, Minos Folegandros, whose name the island took in later times.
